Day 5: ….and that’s a Wrap everyone!
Well, Science Week 2012 is over :( Congratulations to Team Better Major Than Yours for winning the Jeopardy Finals on Friday! Of course, Team 604-7xx-xxxx, and Team HKIN both did an amazing job as well too. I'll be honest, I don't think I'd even be able to answer any of the questions if I wasn't the host. As per usual, Science Week ended with Cold Fusion, which sure was a heck of a party, thanks to Oliver and the SUS Social Committee :)
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my entire Science Week core committee, and the two sub-committees for working so diligently these past three months. They sure did make Ricky and my role as Co-Chairs very easy! 99% of the time, it's as though the both of us weren't even doing anything because all of you pulled your own weight. I'd also like to give another huge shout-out to all our volunteers, especially the Jello Wrestling clean-up crew, for making sure that the SUB Ballroom was spotless of Jello after the event. Furthermore, the SUS executives have also been very supportive this past week. Last but not least, thank YOU for coming to all our events. I hope you enjoyed yourself this entire week!
As a final recap, below are my top 10 favourite Science Week 2012 moments:
- Jello wrestling for the VERY first time in my life (Looks like I'll need to work out a bit more)
- Eating the delicious goods baked by the professors at the Prof Pageant
- Tweeting #SciWeek2012 every 5 minutes
- Becoming a temporary blogger, writing a recap for each day of Science Week
- Eating either muffins or Save-On-Food meat/cheese/veggie platters as dinner for FOUR consecutive nights
- The free liquid nitrogen ice-cream given out by the Undergrad Chemistry Society at the SUB concourse
- Discovering that I can probably find a job as a game show host after I graduate (I still need some work though)
- Giving myself an excuse to procrastinate by making Science Week pins
- Inspirational speech given by Ms. Andrea Holmes about the true definition of "success"
- Working with some of the best people at UBC to organize this entire week
We'll have to end somewhere, right? With that said, this blog serves to mark the end of Science Week 2012. Quoting from America's Next Top Model..."That's a wrap, everyone" We will be back next year to spread another Science pride epidemic.
It’s over already!?
And as Friday draws to a close, it's almost time to say good-bye to Science Week 2012. The amazing bursts of Science pride all over campus will be sorely missed, the aliens will leave, and it will soon be time to return back to normal.
HOWEVER, there are still prizes to be awarded, so let's finish that off! Today's two winners of the raffle draw are Serena R and Donya Samadi, congratulations! I will be in contact with both of you shortly to arrange the pick up of your prize.
Finally, it's been a lot week and we have had some amazing scores for the Alien Invaders game, but it's finally time to announce the grand prize winner. This year's grand prize goes to Amna Khan, with a spectacular time of only 4 seconds! You will receive 1 two week YYoga pass, a $50 Astroff Consultants voucher, and a $50 Eyestar Optical gift card! The others who managed to get into the Hall of Fame, achieving on of the top times of the week and deserving of special honorary mention are:
Thomas, 7 seconds
Divya, 9 seconds
Jeff, 9 seconds
Hamid, 11 seconds.
Congratulations to all you all!
While Science Week may be ending in less then 6 hours, it has most definitely saved its best for last: Cold Fusion will be starting in less then 2 hours, and it's time to party all night long after a week of Science awesomeness!
You will be missed, Science Week 2012.
Hope everyone had a marvelous week! I know I sure did.
Today marks the end of Science Week 2012. It was great getting to see all you science students participate in the events. A million thanks to the SciWeek core committee for putting on this crazy week, the events committee for organizing all the fun activities, and the marketing committee for spreading the word about it. And a virtual high-five (woohoo) to every single volunteer who helped make this week possible.
Make sure check back for announcements of the photo contest winners!
Now who's ready for Cold Fusion?
The Science Week Finale is upon us!
That's right, only 1 more day till the end of Science Week! It's been a blast, but all good things come to an end, and so it is with Science Week.
This will be the second to last time that I announce the winner of the raffle. Thursday's winner is Astrid Mignon, congratulations on winning your $50 voucher to Astroff Consultants, and 1 free SUS t-shirt!
To go out with a bang, we will be awarding two raffle prizes tomorrow, so make sure to come out one last time to maximize your chances of winning! The prizes that will be given out today are 1 two Week YYoga membership and 1 $50 gift certificate to Eyestar Optical. Finally, the grand prize will also be awarded tomorrow. The top time right now for the Alien Invader game is 4 seconds still (!), so come out and try your best to beat it - you could be the lucky winner of 1 two week YYoga membership, 1 $50 eyestar optical gift card, and 1 $50 voucher to Astroff Consultants!
And of course, as mentioned by Serena, there is no blog question of the day, so come out and claim your free pens, candies, and pins (the last of our quickly dwindling stock - come soon or we'll run out!)
Prizes, prizes and more prizes!
I'm so sorry about the extreme lateness of this post!
But we have announced our winners of our photo and twitter contests!! Congratulations to Hanson D., Joanna Y., Lindsay E. and Jolene W. as winners of our twitter contest! You all have each won a $20 giftcard to Starbucks or Tim Hortons or the UBC Bookstore! And, congratulations to Carmen Leung and Jenny Lam as our winners of our photo contest! You both have each won a $20 giftcard to the Starbucks or Tim Hortons! Congratulations everyone!
Tomorrow is the last day of Science Week 2012. :( But, we still have one more awesome events lined up for you all! JEOPARDY FINALS are tomorrow afternoon at the SUB!
Date: Friday Jan.26, 2012
Location: SUB, near Bernoulli's bagels
Time: 12:30PM - 2PM
And we still have a ton of FREE STUFF to give away! We will not be having a blog question for tomorrow. Instead, just come to the SUS booth at the SUB tomorrow to get free pins, pens and candy! Come one, come all!
Day 4: Professor Pageant
A lot of students think that professors are robots; all they do is sit in their office, perform lab experiments, read, and nothing else. If anything, the Professor Pageant that took place today proved otherwise. If you spend the time and go to those office hours, you will soon realize that professors are much friendlier and much more approachable than you think they are.
We had our first "Professor Pageant" today, featuring Dr. Celeste Leander, Dr. Jackie Stewart, Dr. Jennifer Love, and Dr. Angie O'Neill. I'd like to first give a huge shout out to these four beautiful professors who came out today. As per usual, Dr. Love entertained the audience with her nerdy Chemistry jokes (which got me through CHEM 123). It turns out that Dr. Leander and Dr. Stewart are baking experts, and treated all of us with their specialty pie crust and chocolate cookies. Last but not least, Dr. O'Neill performed a song on her guitar for us!
Following the talent component, the four professors's wit were put to the test as they answered some hard questions during the Q&A period. The pageant finished off with a cat work portion.
Here were the awards for the professors:
- Best Talent: Dr. O'Neill
- Best Strut: Dr. Leander
- Most Charismatic: Dr. Love
- Ms. UBC Science Professor 2012: Dr. Stewart
I hope that the Professor Pageant will become an annual tradition every Science Week. If you've missed all our Science Week events, don't worry, we have one final event tomorrow. Come to the SUB concourse at 12:30pm and watch the top three teams compete in the FINAL Jeopardy round.
Well, I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at Cold Fusion tomorrow as well :)
Jello Wrestling, Mystery Box, Lab Reports, Oh My!
...Ok, that last one was something that I personally managed to knock off during the day amid all the craziness, but still :P
As always, Jello Wrestling didn't fail to amaze; with epic showdowns between presidents, vice presidents, and AMS candidates, you really can't go wrong. The Mystery Box, though was something pretty unique that came out, and I must say that some of the items really gave me shivers! I don't know what was in there, and I don't want to know, I was just happy to grab my chocolate and move along. Apparently, word on the street is that the mystery box may make another appearance tomorrow...I guess we'll have to wait and see!
Anyways, on to the prizes! Today, the winner is Allen Zhang, congratulations! You have won 1 two week YYoga pass to any location in the lower mainland! Tomorrow's prize will be 1 $50 voucher for Astroff Consultants, and as a special bonus, one of the t-shirts that Sales Committee is selling at the SUS Booth. Come check out the merchandise, play some cool games, and win some awesome prizes! Oh, and it seems like the competition for the best time in Alien Invaders is really heating up, with an astounding time of 4 seconds (!) as the current record. The prize will be quite good for the eventual winner (products from YYoga, Astroff Consultants, and Eyestar Optical all combined!), so come by and take your shot at being the champion!
Well, this has definitely been an EPIC day, but at the end of it all, I can't help but feel a tinge of sadness...Science Week is 60% over! That's right folks, only TWO more days left of awesomeness, two more days of winning prizes at the SUS Booth, and two more days of spreading the Science Pride epidemic all over campus. While the fun is almost over, we've definitely saved some great events for right at the end, such as our Professor Pageant and Jeopardy Finals, and iKonnect and SUS Social are also putting on their biggest events of the year!
Speaking of SUS Social and their amazing party, Cold Fusion, if anyone needs tickets, hit me up anywhere on campus, I always have a few on me =)
Day 3: Jello Wrestling
Wow, Science Week is half-over already. I'm going to miss hashtaging #SciWeek2012 after this week :(
Today, we held the event everyone has been anticipating for: Jello Wrestling. Thank you for all those who either participated or attended as a spectator. This was my first year Jello Wrestling; never did I know that rolling around in Jello is actually... quite fun, as weird as it sounds. For those of you who have never tried it before, I encourage all of you to include it on your UBC bucket list. Some of the highlights include:
- The battle between Justin Yang and Kiran Mahal, along with the KUS and CUS presidents that we've all been waiting for
- Vicious battle between AMS presidential candidates
- Phil Green's epic Canadian-flag body paint
- ARTS vs. SCIENCE match
- Of course, the SUS vs. AUS VP External match
For those of you who weren't able to attend, don't worry, once I've received the pictures from our photographers, they will be uploaded on Facebook for a more visual recap of the event :)
Well, we have four professors competing in the Professor Pageant tomorrow from 12:30pm to 2:00pm at Ladha, featuring Dr. Jennifer Love, Dr. Angie O'Neil, Dr. Jackie Stewart, and Dr. Celeste Leander. Watch as the four professors compete for the title of Science Professor 2012.
If you haven't already yet, purchase a ticket for Cold Fusion to wrap-up the week with a party you don't want to miss!
Daily Blog Question #6
First of all, thank you to everyone who came out to Jello Wrestling! Great battles were had. Domination was achieved by some. Tomorrow, we have our PROFESSOR PAGEANT. Come out tomorrow to Abdul Ladha to see your favourite professors show off their talents.
Date: Thurs. Jan. 26, 2012 (TOMORROW!)
Location: Abdul Ladha
Time: 12:30PM-2PM
Now, our second to last blog question! And remember to come down to the SUS booth at the SUB with the correct answer to claim your prize!
Question: What is the hashtag we are using to promote Science Week this year? (Hint: It's the same one we are using in our twitter contest!)
See you all tomorrow!
Day 2: Jeopardy + Open Mic
Well, it's me again. Today is the second day of the Science Pride epidemic we are trying to spread on campus. The weather sure wasn't very appealing these past two days, and looking at the weather forecast for the rest of the week, I don't think the rain will go away anytime soon. Regardless, I am strongly confident that our Science Pride will shine through campus in spite of rain, snow, hail, or whatever horrifying weather we are given.
The week is surely passing by in the blink of an eye. After tomorrow, Science Week will be half over :( *sadface*
Congratulations to Team HKin, Better than Your Major, and Team 604-7xx xxxx for advancing to the Jeopardy Finals! Come to the Finals at the SUB Concourse this Friday at 12:30pm.
Also, I'd like to give a huge shout-out to all those who attended the Open Mic night this evening. It sure takes courage to sing embarrassing songs (such as Teenage Dream, Barbie Girl) in front of others. Fabulous prizes were raffled off, including $20 UBC Bookstore gift cards, SUS hoodies, and Starbucks Coffee.
Last but not least, some shameless promotion for what is happening tomorrow:
Come to the SUB concourse at 12:30pm and if you dare, put your hand in one of our mystery box and feel the object to win some prizes.
The event you've been waiting for all year long, Jello Wrestling, will be returning tomorrow from 12:30pm to 2:00pm in the SUB Ballroom.
Lastly, if you have not already done so, please vote in the AMS elections, it literally takes 5 seconds.
